Gate – Thus the JSDF Fought There Anime Announced

On December 18, an anime adaptation for the light novel/manga series Gate – Thus the JSDF Fought There  (Gate – Jietai Kare no Chi nite, Kaku Tatakeri) was announced.  A short PV was added to the official anime site as well.

A brief story summary for those who are not familiar with the series:

A mysterious gate suddenly appears in modern-day Tokyo’s Ginza district.  Warriors who appear to be from middle-age Europe, monsters (e.g. “orcs” and dragons) and other fantasy-like beings pour out of the gate killing many Tokyo citizens in the name of conquest.  The Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF) is quickly mobilized and defeats the invaders using superior modern weaponry and tactics, but the mysterious gate remains. The Japanese government decides to send a small group of soldiers from the JSDF to investigate the alternate world beyond the gate. Led by otaku soldier Lt. Itami,Youji, an Intelligence and Reconnaissance (I&R) platoon discovers that villages in the world are being attacked by a flame dragon. An elf girl, the sole survivor of one such attack, joins the group as they travel across this dangerous new world.

I like this series quite a bit and regularly follow the manga (LN translation has stalled out long ago :/ ).  For those interested in the series and don’t mind being spoiled for the anime, you can read it at the usual places or visit /ak/ scans for releases.  However, this is definitely a NSFW manga – mature, seinen material here, so keep that in mind when deciding whether or not to read it.   As a fan of the series, the anime announcement leaves me with mixed feelings.  While I definitely would like to see a good (let alone great) anime adaptation of Gate, recent, shall we say “sub-par”, anime adaptations have made me much more cautious than optimistic when it comes to these things.  Hopefully, the studio and staff will give this series the quality adaptation I think it deserves.

  1. I love the manga and hope that the anime is just as good, this manga is my second favorite (Arpeggio of Blue Steel being number 1)

    • @Fog Heavy Cruiser Takao: Aoki Hagane no Argeggio is a favorite manga of mine as well. Just wish the releases were not so slow (or at least have longer chapters!). And yeah, I hope they don’t screw up Gate anime. >_> Frankly, the way some adaptations have gone lately, I’m not confident about that. :/

  2. Whoa o.O! Being excited over this anime is an understatement for me, I was jumping up and down and typing a mile a minute trying to find out when this was going to be released… ;_; Septmeber. okay! !Fine! I read the manga (up till Ch 44.) and I have to say that if this anime is close to this manga (ecchi and action included ^.~) then yes it will be my first purchase come the release. There aren’t too many manga’s or anime that are adult oriented so this will be a rare gem if dug up right.

    • @nahum: Agree. IF (key) they do a good job with the adaptation, it should be a fantastic ride. Problem is that “if” part. Been disappointed too often lately with adaptations. For one thing, the pacing might be very fast (compressed material/cut material) in an attempt to finish the whole thing. That’s feasible (maybe) for a 26 episode, 2-cour run – IF the show gets that. Might also get a bunch of anime only stuff which is a wild card in terms of quality.
